🇮🇳 India

Rajasthan

Royal forts, desert sunsets, and living heritage.

Overview

Rajasthan is India's largest state and its most cinematic. Every city is a monument in itself — Jaipur's pink-walled bazaars, Jodhpur's blue-painted medina, Udaipur's lake palaces, and Jaisalmer's golden sandstone fortress rising from the Thar Desert. Travel here rewards slow exploration: the architecture, the food, the craftwork, and the hospitality of its people are all reason enough to stay longer than planned.

Best Time to Visit

Oct–Nov Post-monsoon: clear skies, desert clean, ideal temperatures
Dec–Jan Peak: Jaipur Literature Festival (Jan), Pushkar Fair (Oct–Nov)
Feb–Mar Holi in Mathura–Pushkar, pleasant weather, good photos
Apr Getting hot, shoulder season — good for heritage without crowds
Jun–Sep Summer heat extreme (45°C+), monsoon brings relief, green hills

Practical Information

Getting There Jaipur (JAI) is the main gateway. Jodhpur (JDH), Udaipur (UDR), and Jaisalmer (JSA) also have airports. Delhi to Jaipur by Shatabdi Express is 4.5 hrs.
Getting Around A private cab for the entire circuit is most efficient. Trains work between Jaipur–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer–Udaipur but plan buffer days.
Where to Stay Heritage hotels (converted havelis and palaces) are the signature of Rajasthan. Budget options in all cities. Desert camps in Jaisalmer are unique.
Budget Tips Ranthambore tiger safari: book 3+ months ahead. Havelis in Jodhpur's blue city offer good value. Heritage hotels have early-bird rates.
Weather Oct–Mar is ideal (15–28°C). December nights in Jaisalmer can drop to 5°C. April–Sep is very hot (up to 45°C in May–Jun).
Good to Know Carry light layers for desert nights. Auto-rickshaws in Jaipur are inexpensive. Photography fees at many forts — budget ₹50–200 extra.
